Modest Blouson Top

A modest Blouson top pattern can be easily created with My Sloper. To create the blousing effect, you need to make the waist girth plus ease measurement equal to the chest girth plus ease measurement. A little mathematics is all we need to generate this pattern. Here is a tutorial to show you how.

Some Mathematics

To compute the correct waist ease, add the Chest Girth and Chest Ease together. Then subtract from it the Waist Girth. The result is entered into the Waist Ease. For example, in this pattern, the Chest Girth is 63 and the Waist Girth is 54. Add the Chest Ease (10) to the Chest Girth (63) to produce 73. Then deduct the Waist Girth (54) from 73 to product 19. Enter 19 in the Waist Ease form text box.

Add the Blousing effect by extending the waistline down. The bigger the extension, the more pronounced is the blousing effect. For example, we can enter 5-cm (~ 2-in) or more in the Waist Line Extension box. We also can extend the Hip line to make a blouse extending below the hips. Enter the desired amount in the Hip Line Extension box. Enter the desired Hip Ease to create either a box-like sillouette or a flair sillouette at the hip area.

Front & Back Patterns

Your front and back patterns may look like these.

Upper Bodice Styling

Waisted Bodice Style

Waisted Bodice Style

Go to the Blouse Tab and select one of the waisted bodice styles. Style the upper bodice however you like for it to be modest. We will not use the lower bodice part of the pattern. Keep in mind the Waist Girth plus Waist Ease measurements to be used in the flounce pattern.

The total Waist Girth plus Waist Ease is 64 -cm.

Also style and note the General Seam Allowance for your upper bodice. This measurement will be needed in styling the flounce.

We choose a Back Zipper Opening for this blouse.

Therefore, we need to style the Center Back Seam Allowance of 16-cm for the zipper opening. Note this measurement which we will need in styling the flounce. When you ready, click Draw to render the upper bodice pattern.

Upper Bodice Pattern

Flounce Styling

Now go to the Trims tab. Enter the Flounce Length to be 64-cm, the same length as the Waist Girth plus Waist Ease. Select a Flounce Style — Even Width, Tapered and Spiral. For this pattern, we choose Even Width. Style the Flounce Width. In this case we choose 7.5-cm for the top layer. Enter the General Seam Allowance for the flounce to be the same as the General Seam Allowance for the Upper Bodice, i.e. 10-cm. This flounce can be printed as one or two-piece patterns. We choose 1-piece pattern. You may choose 2-piece patterns if you do not have enough fabric to accommodate the large 1-piece flounce pattern. Style Width 1 Seam Allowance to be the same as the Center Back Seam Allowance for the upper bodice, i.e. 16-cm. Then click Draw to render the pattern.

Lower Bodice Patterns

One-piece Flounce Pattern on the Fold

Repeat the same process for the second layer flounce. The only thing you need to change is the Flounce Width, which is longer than the first.

You can continue styling the upper bodice with the default sleeve pattern or a more custom one under the Sleeves Tab; a collar in the Neckwear-Draft Collars Tab; or default Jewel neckline. In Version 1.72+, you have the option of a modest Cowl Neckline as well.

Center Tapered Flounce Top

This tutorial shows you how to design a top with a center tapered flounce with My Sloper.

Blouse Styling

Basic Bodice Style

Select the Basic Bodice Style in the Blouse Tab.

In this style of blouse, we want the Center Front to have a seam. Enter the seam allowance for the Center Front.

It so happens that the sample pattern for this tutorial also has a Front Zipper. So set the seam allowance to be the zipper allowance of a standard 5/8-in or 16 mm.

The default General Seam Allowance is 3/8-in or 10-mm. Change that value if you have a different requirement.

Flounce Styling

Trims Tab Flounce Styling

Click the Trims Tab. Determine the length of the flounce you would like for the Center Front of the blouse. Enter that number in the Flounce Length. Then, select the Flounce Style — Tapered. Determine the width of the flounce you desire, for e.g. 7.5-cm in the Flounce Width 1. Since a tapered flounce tapers to 0 width, we don’t need to enter a Flounce Width 2. Enter the default General Seam Allowance to be the same as the one in your Blouse styling. Enter the Width 1 Seam Allowance to be the same as the Center Front Seam Allowance in your Blouse styling. When you’re ready, click the Draw button.

In this tutorial you will learn how to assemble a blouse based on our Kosher Blouse Pattern for women or girls.

Your Pattern Pages

The cut pieces of fabric from our blouse pattern may look something like this.

Sew Neck Facings

  1. Sew Back Neck Facing to Front Neck Facing at the shoulder seam line.
  2. Repeat for second facing.
  3. Turn facing over to get Result 3.

Sew Front & Back Bodices

  1. Sew front and back bodices at the shoulder seam line.
  2. Repeat for the other back bodice.
  3. Turn bodices over to get Result 3.

Sew Neck Facing to Blouse Neckline

  1. With right sides facing together, sew completed neck facing to the blouse neckline.
  2. Watch this video tutorial, courtesy of Fashion Sewing Blog TV.

Sew Blouse Side Seams

The blouse is now attached at the shoulder, and its neck facing attached at the necklines.
Sew the two side seams of the blouse from below the armhole to the hem line.

Sew No-Ease Sleeves

Your sleeve pattern may have been drafted with no-ease in the sleeve cap, which means that sewing this type of sleeve into the bodice armhole will be a breeze.
Sew Sleeves My Sloper
  1. Sew side seams of sleeves right sides facing.
  2. Hem the sleeves and turn sleeves wrong sides facing.
  3. Match sleeve to bodice armhole right sides facing at the notches.
  4. For the beginner:
  • Baste the sleeve cap to the bodice, right sides facing, matching the sleeve notch to the bodice armhole notch.
  • Sew with a sewing machine along the seam line.

For the seasoned dressmaker, just skip the basting step and sew the sleeve cap directly onto the armhole, matching all notches.

Repeat for the other sleeve.

Sew Set-in Sleeves

If your sleeve pattern has ease at the sleeve cap, you will have to use this method of sewing.
  1. Sew one or two lines of gathering stitches at the sleeve cap from dot to dot
  2. Sew the side seams. Hem the sleeves.
  3. Turn the sleeves inside out.
  4. Insert one sleeve into the blouse armhole, gather the sleeve cap to ease into the armhole. Repeat for the other sleeve.

Sew the Back Zipper

Our blouse pattern provides for a 5/8 in (1.6 cm) zipper extension allowance on the back bodice. We recommend using a modest invisible zipper.
  • Use an invisible zipper to close the back bodice.
  • Pick a zipper length that you like, starting from 4 inches.
  • Watch this video tutorial on how to se a hidden zipper.

Hem the Blouse

The last step is to hem the blouse. Our patterns provide a 1 inch (2.5 cm) hem allowance. There are various ways of hemming and can be done by hand or sewing machine. Here’s a nice video tutorial courtesy of Threads Magazine.
